Official Logistics Partner of the 2016 RC44 Valletta Cup

The final event in the 2016 RC44 Championship Tour Series was held between the 23rd and 27th of November and took place in Malta’s peninsular capital city, Valletta.

The RC44 Championship Tour is a prestigiously renowned series amongst the competitive yacht racing circuit, with names of Olympic champions and America’s Cup winners attached to it, and is celebrating the 10th anniversary since its inception. O&S Shipping is honoured to have been the Official Logistics Partner of the RC44 Valletta Cup during this final leg in the championship.

The RC44 Valletta Cup marks the second time the Championship Series has visited Malta, and it is no wonder given that Valletta has one of the world’s largest and deepest natural harbours. Its position within the Mediterranean also insures safe winds and overall agreeable sailing conditions. In addition, Malta’s ideal weather conditions and relatively calm seas allow for smooth and secure transportation of sea vessels, as was carried out by O&S for the duration of the RC44 Valletta Cup.

O&S Shipping played a role in this year’s RC44 Valletta Cup

O&S Shipping was responsible for the ship agency which freighted 23 containers in total, including boats and equipment from the port of Portugal to Valletta.

We assisted the teams with all their logistics requirements such as clearance, deliveries and storage of parts and equipment, e.g. sails. We also coordinated discharge operations and positioning of containers, ase well setting up of boats per the stow plan. Through a crane and lifting service, we assisted the teams in setting up masts and then launch their yachts in water.

After the race, O&S handled the same operations, but in reverse. We lifted the boats from the water to their respective cradle containers, demasted them, and transported them from Boiler Wharf (the technical area) to Valletta Port for their final destination in Valencia, Spain, where they will remain for winter storage until the 2017 championship.

O&S is at the forefront of yachting transport, customs clearance, deliveries or any other logistics requirements related to boats and yachts in Malta. We have worked with world leading yacht transporters for several years in order to ensure the tailor-constructed strategies for transportation that ensure the satisfaction of its clients and the safety of the vessel, whether it is a sailing yacht, motor yacht, work boat, jet ski, day cruiser or otherwise.

A ‘double’ victory for Team CEEREF

The impressive fleet of participating yachts and their equally impressive team of sailors battled it out on the open sea throughout the week, however on the final day of the cup the wind did not pick up enough for the fleet of ten yachts to set sail. As a result, the concluding points were calculated based on their performance throughout the week and their previous performances in other international yachting competitions.

Although Chris Bake’s Team Aqua won on Saturday, the penultimate day of the race, by 1 point on Igor Lah’s Team CEEREF, it was the Slovenian Team CEEREF that came out as the overall winner of the RC44 Valletta Cup having entered the final event with an initial 2-point advantage. This means that Team CEEREF won the Cup by 1 point on Team Aqua and gained the famous ‘double’ victory: victory in the World Championship held in Sotogrande, Spain as well as this victory in the overall season championship. Alexander Novoselov’s Katusha achieved third place, an honourable win given that this was Novoselov’s first full season in the class.

O&S wishes to congratulate Team CEEREF and the other winners of the 2016 RC44 Championship Tour Series, and to extend its compliments towards all participating teams for a very successful and enjoyable season. We look forward to what the RC44 Championship Tour will bring in the future seasons.
